Affordable root canal treatment in Melbourne

A root canal is a procedure used to remove the internal pulp tissue of a tooth that becomes inflamed or infected from the nerve of a tooth. Sensitivity and severe pain can occur as the nerve lies within the tooth’s canal. Infection and inflammation of the pulp can occur due to bacteria entering the tooth — caused by chipping, deep fillings, cracks or tooth decay.

The purpose of endodontic treatment, also known as the root canal procedure, is to prevent any further spreading of infection and to save the tooth by removing the internal pulp and nerve.

Your tooth structure
Every tooth consists of two parts — the root and the crown. The root lies underneath the gumline, anchored to the bone, and contains the root canal. The pulp at its centre nourishes your teeth and keeps them healthy. If the pulp becomes infected with root-level decay, it becomes necessary to remove it and protect the remaining tooth structure. A root canal allows your dentist to clean the inside of the tooth thoroughly and seal it to prevent further damage — providing a healthy restored tooth, with normal bite function and chewing sensation, that can last a lifetime.

About our endodontic treatment procedure

Our treatment process starts with a thorough examination of your mouth to determine the complexity of the issue. We may take X-rays to plan a customised approach — identifying the size, number, curvature, and depth of the roots. Like any dental procedure, we use a local anaesthetic to numb the area.

Our dentist will open the top of the tooth to remove the damaged or infected pulp from the inside. The next stage takes the longest, as it is essential for proper recovery — cleaning. We fully clean the inside of the tooth and its root to make it completely free from the bacteria that caused the damage, then dry the area. We fill the canal and place a crown onto your tooth for added protection and strength — placed a few days after the root canal.

The cost of root canal therapy in Melbourne
The cost of a root canal depends on several factors: the number of canals to be filled, whether you require a crown, the complexity of your oral health, consultation fees, the qualification and experience of the dentist, location, your age and overall health condition, and the number of dental services used to complete your treatment.

Why you may require root canal therapy

Nerve damage
When the nerve of your tooth dies, our dentist recommends a root canal to prevent bacteria from spreading. The root of the tooth is filled and capped with a crown. The removal of the infected nerve saves your natural tooth from further damage or extraction.
Tooth sensitivity
If you experience extreme tooth sensitivity that cannot be solved by other treatment options, a root canal treatment may be the best option. We generally reserve the root canal until all other options are implemented.
Dental abscess
A dental abscess occurs due to infection. If you experience severe pain and cannot bite down or chew your food correctly, you may have a dental abscess — we recommend a root canal in such a case.
Tooth restoration work
While performing restorative work, we may recommend a root canal depending on your dental condition. For example, when getting a bridge or crown, we may need to adjust the shape of your existing teeth, which can result in an exposed nerve — a root canal prevents nerve pain.

FAQ’s about root canals

Are there alternatives to a root canal?+
Yes — the option to remove the tooth, and either leave the space empty, or place a dental implant or bridge can be discussed.
What if the tooth has already been root treated before?+
The success rate of a previously treated tooth is reduced when it is performed again. The options need to be weighed out, and it may be better to remove the tooth and place a dental implant or bridge instead.
How long does a root canal last?+
The root treated tooth should last a long time if you continue to care for your teeth and gums and attend routine dental check-ups. Regular imaging will be taken at specific intervals to review the health of your root treated tooth. It is case specific — the pre-existing condition of the tooth and surrounding structures will determine the longevity of treatment. All medical treatments carry risks; visit our treatment risks page.
What happens after a root canal?+
It is important that the tooth is crowned after treatment — to protect the tooth from fracturing. More information on dental crowns can be found on our tooth-coloured restoration pages.
Where is your clinic located?+
We are located in Melbourne at 118-120 High Street, Thornbury. We are on the border of Thornbury and South Preston, close to Bell Street, and just a stones throw away from surrounding suburbs like Northcote, Brunswick, Preston and Heidelberg.
